What are these Jelly Donuts?
Besides a Christmas dessert, it is also a traditional Jewish dessert made in the Hanukkah holiday. Typiclly they are deep-fried. They symbolize the miracle of the burning oil lamps in the ancient Holy Temple in Jerusalem celebrated during Hanukkah. Plump up each doughnut with your favorite fruit jam. For a wintry effect, sprinkle the tops with granulated sugar.
Is it better baked or fried?
Obviously, baking is healthier; however, if you use an air fryer, this option is the best! The classical Sufganiyots are always deep-fried. To put it delicately, baked donuts are the healthier option compared to traditional deep-fried donuts. If you decide to bake them, they won't leave you feeling as guilty about your choices. You only need 1 tablespoon of melted butter to coat all 12 donuts! Are donuts good for you? In the end, they are still sugar-covered carbs… glorious carbs! Eat responsibly.
What is the Best Filling for Sufganiyot/ Jelly Donuts?
We enjoy changing up the type of jelly in these baked donuts; strawberry, blueberry, raspberry, huckleberry,.. you name it! Whether you are using jam, preserves, or jelly, pick one that is:
- Thick – a thick jelly won’t run out of the donut as easily
- Fairly Smooth – so the piping tip doesn’t get clogged
- Your favorite flavor – these are, after all, for you!

How to Make Strawberry Jelly:
Ingredients You Need:
1 Pound Fresh Strawberries
1 Teaspoon Lemon Juice
2-3 Tablespoons Agave Syrup or White Sugar
Instructions:
Start by washing, hulling and quartering your fresh strawberries
Place the strawberries, lemon juice, and sugar or agave syrup in a good quality pot and cook on medium heat for 25 minutes
Continuously smash the strawberries with a wooden spook to help release the juices of the strawberries and help the jelly to thicken
I like to leave my jelly with small chunks in it but if you want a smoother texture you can food process the jelly
Place in a Mason Jar and refrigerate for up to a week.
